MATHCOUNTS is a coaching and competition program that brings to math achievement the same enthusiasm and prestige now enjoyed by athletics. Students are called “mathletes" and are rewarded for winning
competitions at the school, area, state and national levels.
The objectives of MATHCOUNTS are:
- To elevate the prestige associated with achievement in mathematics among seventh and eighth grade students,
- to increase awareness of the importance of mathematics among parents, educators and the general public; and,
- To bring about improvements in mathematics curricula and instruction.
Each fall junior high schools receive MATHCOUNTS kits which include program information and competition materials. Math teachers use the kit to enhance their classes and make
learning math exciting and meaningful. In January teachers conduct a school MATHCOUNTS competition. Winners progress through five chapter competitions in February and the Connecticut state competitions
in March and then to the national competition held each spring in Washington, D.C.
Students and teachers can find a variety of great information about MATHCOUNTS by visiting the MATHCOUNTS - web site at www.mathcounts.org.
