Defending the License

One of CSPE’s primary functions is defending the PE license. Recently CSPE President Mark Goldberg, PE;  Board member Anne Proctor, PE and Executive Director Paul Brady testified before a public hearing of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection to protest their draft General Permits for Discharge of Minor Printing and Publishing Wastewater and Discharge of Groundwater Remediation Wastewater to a Sanitary Sewer. The proposed draft would allow certification of the permit application by PEs, Licensed Environmental Professionals and Certified Hazardous Materials Managers. We testified that the certification falls under the practice of engineering and should be limited (as it is now) to Professional Engineers licensed in Connecticut. If you are interested in commenting in support of our proposal, please email pbrady@ctspe.net.

State MATHCOUNTS Competition

MATHCOUNTS turns 25 this year. Funny thing, but the kids look younger each year! Registration materials have been sent to each school. If you have links to a middle school, ask them if they are registered to participate in MATHCOUNTS. We are looking for volunteers for the five regional chapter competitions. If you are interested, please contact the CSPE Office. Our special thanks to the Pitney Bowes Literacy and Education Foundation who are a major sponsor for Connecticut this year.

Career Board

As another membership service, CSPE has launched its own Career Board on our web site. Members will be able to post their resumes and search criteria for free. Employers will be able to post open positions and be able to search resumes on the board and boards for surrounding states for a reasonable fee. Go to: http://jobs.ctspe.net/home/index.cfm?site_id=720 .

Mark Austin, Fellow NSPE

Congratulations to Mark Austin, PE who has been named a Fellow of the National Society of Professional Engineers for his long history of contributions to the state and national society as well as work in the community. Mark is currently serving as State Delegate to the NSPE House of Delegates.

Happy Birthday to You!

NSPE celebrated the 100th  anniversary of engineering licensure, including recognition of William Bellamy, P.E., NSPE, the grandson of the late Charles Bellamy, P.E., the first licensed professional engineer in Wyoming, the first state with an engineering licensure law (1907). Also at the meeting, The NSPE Professional Engineers in Private Practice (PEPP) division celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a recognition of past and present achievements. NSPE convened a software engineering licensure summit meeting with representatives from NSPE, IEEE, NCEES and other groups to explore ways in which to license software engineers for the protection of the public health safety and welfare. The NSPE Board of Directors approved in concept the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) Position Statement on Fire Protection Systems Engineering and elected Bradley Aldrich, P. E. as the 2009-2010 NSPE President and Russel Devick, P.E., F.NSPE as 2007-2009 NSPE Treasurer.
